Keeping Valley Lake Community Assets Together
After a competitive sales process, the council will take ownership of the site – with plans to transform it with input from local residents in the coming months.
The sales process, managed by Development Victoria, the Labor Government’s property developer, aimed to deliver a positive outcome for the community to complement the close-knit Valley Lake neighbourhood.
Formerly a disused quarry, the Valley Lake development showcases the Government’s strong record of delivery on urban renewal and quality housing in sought-after and growing neighbourhoods close to the CBD on the freeway, public transport and bike path networks.
The Bracks Labor Government purchased the Valley Lake site in 2000, and after extensive rehabilitation by Development Victoria the quarry was transformed into a premium residential estate.
Today it features more than 500 homes, 30 per cent open space, community amenities like recreation trails and playgrounds and a focus on sustainable design and architecture.
In 2011, Valley Lake was acknowledged by the Urban Development Institute of Australia for an urban renewal award in recognition of the Government’s work in delivering the site.
This long-term program of renewal at Valley Lake has delivered outstanding outcomes for the community and visitors to Melbourne’s north-west, and the sale of the former sales office site will be the last piece in the puzzle to be finalised.
During 2020, Development Victoria delivered improvement works throughout the Valley Lake community like street landscaping, installation of the Steele Creek pedestrian bridge, design works to reconstruct the clifftop walkway and rectify the rock face wall and water quality testing of the lake.
The clifftop walkway and rock face wall will be reconstructed in the coming months, alongside the continuation of regular maintenance and landscaping works across the estate.

“It was a Labor government that secured the future of Valley Lake more than 20 years ago, and it’s a Labor government that is handing the final piece of the estate back to council to be enjoyed by the whole community.”
“The residents of Valley Lake already enjoy an award-winning development, and this is a perfect opportunity to create even more community spaces for them to enjoy.”
